But the magic did not end there, as Caryn Siebert, vice president of carrier practice at Gallagher Bassett, took the stage to accept CLM’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Compex Legal. Over her career, Siebert has embodied the true spirit of the award—which recognizes a long-time professional who has made a lasting impact on the industry and CLM—by consistently being a champion of innovation, creativity, and her fellow industry professionals. Within CLM, Siebert has brought key leadership, a wealth of knowledge, and tireless dedication since 2009. In her acceptance speech, Siebert offered an interesting take on CLM, stating that, to her, the “C” stands for “Community,” “Connections,” “Ca- reer,” and “Colleagues.” In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, CLM’s Profes- sional of the Year Awards were also an- nounced. The outside defense counsel Professional of the Year is Bill Mitchell, founding partner at Cruser, Mitchell, Novitz, Sanchez, Gaston & Zimet LLP. Mitchell is known for his dedication to resolving disputes, rather than simply winning them. He consistently shares his insights and experience through de- velopment of courses, thought leader- ship, and presentations. Within CLM, Mitchell has been a frequent speaker at annual conferences, an instructor at Litigation Management Institute, and has taught at Claims College for over 10 years. He also earned his CLMP in 2013. Other nominees for outside counsel Professional of the Year were Jason Feld, Kahana Feld LLP; and Frances O’Meara, Wood Smith Hen- ning & Berman LLP. The claims and litigation Profes- sional of the Year is Sarannah McMurtry, senior vice president, general counsel at First Acceptance Insurance Company, Inc. Known as an “extra-contractual guru,” McMurtry is passionate about insurance claims, litigation management, and teaching others in the industry A Magical Evening of Recognizing Excellence BY PHIL GUSMAN T his morning’s premier session, “Defining the Relationship: Is Outside Defense Counsel a Carrier’s Partner or Vendor?” gets to the heart of CLM—bringing together claims and litigation professionals to explore their relationship in an attempt to improve cooperation and coordination.
